Despite knowing they were eliminated from further competition, Costa Rica showed up with an impressive 3-2 win over a rotated Colombia squad. The loss means Colombia finish second in Group A, with the United States moving ahead on goal differential.
Los Ticos opened up the scoring with a goal on their first opportunity. Celso Borges punted the ball from the Costa Rica half forward to Montreal Impact midfielder Johan Venegas. The Ticos' lone forward took his first touch and then halfway through a turn away from goal launched a perfect ball to the far corner that Robinson Zapata was powerless to stop.
It didn't take long for Colombia to level, as only four minutes later Frank Fabra did it all himself to score. Yet Fabra was also responsible for Costa Rica going back in front, sliding in to accidentally knock a hopeful cross into his own net.
Costa Rica grabbed their third goal in the second half on a well worked team goal, and though Los Cafeteros pulled one back, they were unable to pull on top.
