US soccer legend Landon Donovan is in advanced negotiations to join the American ownership group that is buying majority control of English Premier League club Swansea City, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.
Stein reported on Thursday that Donovan is set to become a minority shareholder and partner in the group, which is led by D.C. United managing partner Jason Levien and Memphis Grizzlies vice chairman Steve Kaplan. According to Stein, Donovan will advise Levien and Kaplan on soccer decisions and commercial matters.
It was reported in January that Donovan and FOX Sports analyst Warren Barton were looking to form a USL team in San Diego. Donovan denied the report shortly after it became public.
The all-time leading scorer in MLS and US men’s national team history, Donovan retired following the 2014 MLS season. The six-time MLS Cup champion has done some broadcast work since hanging up his cleats, and will appear on FOX Sports’ studio coverage before and after the USMNT’s Copa America Centenario match against Paraguay on Saturday (7 pm ET; FS1, Univision, UDN).
