The Seattle Sounders haven’t exactly gotten off to a rousing start this season, with the club currently sitting in ninth place in the West with a 4-6-1 record.
Seattle have struggled mightily in the attack following the sale of star striker Obafemi Martins to China in February, scoring just 10 goals – the second fewest in the league – in their 13 games. That number is a clear concern for Sounders GM Garth Lagerwey, who addressed the Sounders’ rough start and offensive woes in a lengthy interview with The Tacoma News Tribune’s Don Ruiz on Wednesday.
Lagerwey told Ruiz that he’s looking to sign one Designated Player and one Targeted Allocation Money-level player once the league’s secondary transfer window opens on July 4. The Sounders were linked to Uruguayan international and Boca Juniors midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro earlier this month.
“We’re attempting to add two players: one Designated Player, one TAM-level player,” Lagerwey said. “There’s a couple of ways that can shake out, but that’s the goal, and I think if you combine that with the return of [injured center back] Roman Torres hopefully at some point, and you say will the team be better adding three starting-level players – because whoever plays the best is going to play – I think that would make any team better at midseason.”
Lagerwey, who said that he still expects the Sounders to make the playoffs, also spoke with Ruiz about Sigi Schmid’s future, shared more details on Martins’ move and spoke about his broader philosophy for the club. You can find the entire interview here.
