DC United, midfielder Markus Halsti mutually part ways

Markus Halsti - DC United - May 2015

Midfielder Markus Halsti’s time with D.C. United is at an end.

D.C. United and the Finnish midfielder have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, the club announced on Wednesday.

“We thank Markus for his contributions to the club,” said Dave Kasper, DCU general manager, in a statement. “We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

The 32-year-old played 14 regular season matches and made three postseason appearances last year, but 2016 has been rockier. He battled injury through the preseason and fell in the team’s depth chart, leaving him without a single minute of playing time this regular season.

He was called up for Finland national team duty next week and departed Washington D.C. on Tuesday. He has 25 appearances for the national team to date.

Halsti was signed on Jan. 12, 2015, following seven seasons with Malmö FF in the Swedish first division.

The contract termination will free up an international roster spot and resources that D.C. United can use to potentially target another player in the upcoming transfer window this summer.
