The Italian national team will be looking for their second UEFA European Championship title this summer, and they will apparently be doing so without their two MLS-based internationals.
Italy head coach Antonio Conte revealed his preliminary 30-man roster for the upcoming Euro 2016 tournament, and neither Toronto FC star Sebastian Giovinco or New York City FC midfielder Andrea Pirlo were included in the squad. Both players have been regular starters for their respective Eastern Conference clubs this season, but have apparently not done enough to catch the eye of Conte.
Giovinco, 29, has enjoyed a strong campaign up to this point for fourth-placed Toronto with a league-high eight goals and five assists in 12 games. The 37-year-old Pirlo, meanwhile, has two assists in 11 appearances for NYCFC, who sit in second place in the East.
Both players have earned a number of caps with the Azzurri throughout the years. Giovinco has played in 23 matches and scored one goal for Italy, and Pirlo has seen time in 116 encounters while contributing 13 goals.
Italy, who have only won the Euros once, back on home soil in 1968, have to submit their final roster to UEFA on May 31.
This year's Euros run from June 10 to July 10 in France.
