Orlando’s love for pro soccer goes well beyond just MLS.
The Orlando Pride set the NWSL single-game attendance record on Saturday, with 23,403 showing up to the Citrus Bowl for the club’s inaugural home match, a 3-1 win over the Houston Dash. The mark broke the previous attendance record of 21,144 set in 2015 by the Portland Thorns.
US women’s national team striker Alex Morgan and English international Lianne Sanderson had the goals for the Pride, who also benefitted from a Dash own goal. Houston and USWNT midfielder Carli Lloyd had to leave the match in the 12th minute due to a minor MCL sprain that will keep her out for three-to-six weeks.
The Pride are owned by Orlando City SC, who averaged 32,847 fans at the Citrus Bowl in their debut MLS season last year. The Lions have averaged just over 39,000 fans at their four home games this year, drawing a high of 60,147 in their season-opener against Real Salt Lake.
