RBNY head coach Jesse Marsch says team is "not very sharp" in 0-2-0 start

MONTREAL – After another loss without the New York Red Bulls scoring a goal, this time 3-0 to the Montreal Impact -- a club Jesse Marsch helmed during the 2012 MLS season, did not sit well with the Red Bulls' coach.

With just nine shots taken, including three on target, New York were unable to get the ball in the back of the net. One particular chance that came off the foot of Bradley Wright-Phillips should have tied the score at 1-1. With that chance, and a few others, Marsch was not impressed by his team’s offensive creativity and finishing.

"We haven’t been very sharp. We haven’t put some chances away but that being said, we haven’t created enough," Marsch said. "We’ve had possession in the other team’s half and now have been able to establish possession at different moments but hasn’t led to enough chances. And when we had enough chances, we haven’t been sharp enough to put away goals."

A goalscoring drought has taken its toll on a revamped defensive line for the Red Bulls. Conceding five goals in two games is not the start the head coach was hoping for.

"Obviously the longer you go in games and you’re not able to take some of your good plays and have it add up then it puts more pressure on the back and that’s what happened tonight," Marsh said. "Congratulations to Montreal, they were dangerous and we did not well enough to deal with some of their dangerous attacking players."

2015 Goalkeeper of the Year Luis Robles did not pull any punches when discussing the play of the team on the defensive side of the ball.

"I don't think they anyone can say that our defensive effort was good enough," said Robles, who has played every minute for the club since the end of the 2012 season.

Red Bulls midfielder Felipe also said "we didn't do what the coach asked," as he was discussing the team's tactics in the match.

When asked if he is concerned about a 0-2-0 start to the season, Marsch did not shy away from the reality of a dire situation but understands the nature of a MLS season.

‘’It’s not a good start. It is a long season and we still need to find a way to maintaining a commitment and a focus to the daily process that has gotten success since I’ve been here.’’
