One day after announcing the signings of Brandon Allen and Derrick Etienne, the New York Red Bulls added another Homegrown player on Tuesday: Red Bulls Academy product and Georgetown University forward Alex Muyl.
Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
A native of New York City, Muyl, 20, played three seasons at Georgetown, totaling 12 goals and 25 assists in his Hoyas career. He was Georgetown’s second-leading scorer in 2015, finishing with six goals, trailing only Allen for the team lead. His 10 assists were the most on the team, second in the BIG EAST Conference and eighth in the nation.
Muyl becomes the eighth Homegrown player on the Red Bulls current roster, and the 13th in club history. The Red Bulls have the most Homegrown players on their current roster of any team in MLS.
“We are very pleased to add Alex to our club,” said Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis, in a statement released by the club. “We consider him one of the best rising players in college soccer, and we have high expectations for him as he continues to develop in our professional environment.”
Added Curtis: “What’s also very exciting is the fact that every youth player and family in the tri-state area can witness how we are embracing young local talent in a very meaningful way."
Prior to playing at Georgetown, Muyl played for the Red Bulls Academy, notching the game-winning goal for the Red Bulls U-16s in the 2012 US Soccer Developmental Academy national championship and leading the U-18s to the USSDA title in 2013. He has played for the US U-17 and U-18 national teams and been called to camps for the U-20s and U-23s.
“I’m really excited,” Muyl said, in the statement. “This has been a goal of mine my whole life, and to be able to start my career in a place that I know, in a place that I’ve grown up, around people that I’ve grown up with, is an honor. I’m excited to start.”
