ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – Borussia Monchengladbach ace Fabian Johnson returned to training on Monday afternoon, but the club is still unsure as to when he will return to the selection from a toe injury.
The US winger, who departed early from last Tuesday's Champions League defeat at Manchester City, was held out of their 5-0 Bundesliga loss at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. A club spokesman informed MLSsoccer.com that Johnson re-joined the squad for training, but his status for Tuesday's DfB-Pokal Round of 16 home tilt against Werder Bremen was unclear.
Saturday's loss snapped Monchengladbach’s 10-game unbeaten run that started when Johnson came back from an early season hamstring strain that forced him to miss four league matches. Since arriving from Hoffenheim during the summer of 2014, 'Gladbach have posted an impressive 19-1-6 record in league games with the American starting.
This term, Johnson already has bagged a career-best six goals, including two in Champions League play, to go with three assists. The Foals currently stand fifth in the Bundesliga table, mere goal differential shy of the last Champions League spot.
