International duty wrapped up on Tuesday for November’s FIFA window, with a number of MLS players getting some run for their national teams before returning to their clubs.
Krisztian Nemeth and Hungary and Robbie Keane, Kevin Doyle and Ireland qualified for next summer’s UEFA Euro 2016 on Sunday and Monday, respectively, while several other players from around the league took part in African and CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying early on Tuesday.
Montreal Impact defender Ambroise Oyongo helped Cameroon get through their second round qualifying series against Niger, going the full 90 for his country as they played to a scoreless draw to advance 3-0 on aggregate.
Columbus Crew SC right back Harrison Afful helped Ghana see through their series against tiny Comoros, putting in a full shift for the Black Stars in their 2-0 second-leg win following last Thursday’s scoreless draw in the series opener. Chicago Fire attacker David Accam didn’t get off the bench in Ghana’s win.
Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins came off the bench for Nigeria on Tuesday, playing the final 15 minutes as the Super Eagles beat Swaziland 2-0 to claim a 2-0 aggregate victory.
Elsewhere in Africa, Columbus midfielder Cedrick Mabwati didn’t feature as the Democratic Republic of the Congo drew 2-2 with Burundi to hang on to a 5-4 aggregate win.
Seattle Sounders midfielder Marco Pappa and FC Dallas defender Moises Hernandez had a productive day with Guatemala, who notched a 4-0 win at St. Vincent & the Grenadines to improve to 1-1-0 in Group 3 action. Hernandez went the full 90 for Los Chapines, while Pappa came off the bench to play the final 15 minutes. Real Salt Lake defender Elias Vasquez did not feature in the match.
Things didn’t go as well for Luis Garrido, Boniek Garcia and Honduras, who fell 2-0 at Mexico. The main headline from the match, sadly, wasn’t even the result, as Garrido – whose loan to Houston expired after this season – suffered a gruesome leg injury late in the first half. Boniek went the full 90 for Los Catrachos, who are now 0-2-0 in Group 1.
FC Dallas defender Atiba Harris also saw action on Tuesday, going the full 90 for St. Kitts & Nevis in their 3-0 friendly loss at Estonia.
