Vincent Kompany has become synonymous with Manchester City FC after seven productive years at the heart of the English Premier League titans' backline – but he already has Major League Soccer in mind for the next chapter of his career.
The 29-year-old center back – who captained Belgium in their gripping 2-1 win over the US national team in last year's World Cup – has hoisted two EPL championship trophies as well as FA Cup and League Cup titles during his time in the blue half of Manchester, and doesn't look likely to stop hunting for more such hardware any time soon.
But he's highly interested in giving MLS a try when his current contract runs out in three years' time, he revealed in an in-depth interview with NBCSports.com released on Friday.
“It has been crazy since [EPL icons Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard] have moved over, because MLS is always on. You get to see so much of MLS now, so it’s actually becoming quite a relevant league to people over here,” Kompany said.
Man City's relationship with 2015 expansion side New York City FC has further piqued his interest.
“Obviously, we follow quite closely what New York City FC does. For us, it is quite important to be supportive towards that club as well,” said Kompany, a savvy scholar of the game who is set to earn a masters degree in business administration that could serve him well when his playing days are over.
“The level is increasing every single year. You see new franchises coming in, you see so many people going to the stadiums and they are also good stadiums now. I think it is just a fun league to be in, so I wouldn’t be surprised to go over there when my contract comes to an end at City.”
