It was a change that seemed inevitable.
Chivas USA announced on Friday night that they’ve parted ways with head coach Robin Fraser and assistant Greg Vanney after two largely unsuccessful years in charge. Also shown the door were head scout Simon Elliott and athletic trainer Brian Lee.
Fraser, who was a two-time MLS Defender of the Year during his playing days, took over the Rojiblancos in early 2011 after distinguished stint as the top assistant at Real Salt Lake. The 2009 RSL side won the MLS Cup, while the 2010 side set the MLS record for fewest goals conceded in a season.
He was unable to bring that type of success with him to the Home Depot Center, however, posting just a 15-32-21 record in charge. Despite discovering a top-tier goalkeeper in Dan Kennedy, Fraser’s Goats struggled almost from day one, and were never a serious threat to make the playoffs in either 2011 or 2012.
It all finally came crashing down in the second half of this past year, as Chivas went on a 14-game winless skid – which included five separate four-goal losses – to end the season dead last in the Western Conference.
