The left-footed blast from Carlos Ruiz that made waves in MLS last weekend indeed got its vindication, easily topping the field for the AT&T Goal of the Week for Week 10.
The Philadelphia Union veteran — who recently earned a call-up for the Guatemalan national team for next month’s Gold Cup — rocketed a left-footed shot from roughly 35 yards out after a flubbed free kick, beating Chicago Fire goalkeeper Jon Conway and helping the Union log a crucial 2-1 win at PPL Park.
The goal — which more than one Union teammate instantly dubbed as the Goal of the Year frontrunner — earned 64 percent of the vote, nearly three times as many as the number earned for a gorgeous free kick from San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Bobby Convey in a 2-1 win over New England.
