Jorge Perlaza’s historic goal against the Chicago Fire didn’t just pop the top on JELD-WEN Field last Thursday night. It was also the AT&T Goal of the Week.
Perlaza’s crafty run and clever cutback in the 29th minute led to the first goal in the history of Portland’s sparkling new stadium, and it keyed the Timbers’ dramatic 4-2 win over Chicago in their MLS home opener. He took a feed down the left side from Kalif Alhassan and cut inside to get past Logan Pause, then coolly slotted a shot past Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson and to the back post to the delight of the sellout crowd.
The goal earned 32 percent of this week’s vote, easily topping Thierry Henry’s first goal of the season, a header to the far post to cap New York’s 3-0 win over San Jose.
