Colorado Rapids striker Omar Cummings wasn't even supposed to be in Commerce City for Saturday night's match with Chivas USA. The Jamaican international was called up to his national team, but due to citizenship paperwork, he was forced to turn down the invitation for the weekend friendly with Costa Rica.
Good thing for the Rapids. And for Cummings. He notched two goals and had a hand in a third as the Rapids routed the Goats, 3-0. For his efforts, Cummings was named MLS Player of the Week for Week 23.
The 28-year-old Cummings now has eight goals on the season, matching his career high, set during his 2009 breakout season.
Cummings is the first Rapids player to be named POTW since Conor Casey was recognized in Week 21 of the 2009 season.
He has since joined the Jamaican national team for a friendly on Tuesday against Peru in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
