Washington, D.C. --
D.C. United has announced the signing of midfielder Dan Stratford to a senior developmental contract. The London, England native enjoyed a successful collegiate career at West Virginia University in advance of United acquiring Stratford's playing rights with their second round selection (24th overall) in the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft on January 24, 2008. Per club and League policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Dan has impressed with a solid pre-season training camp and we look forward to his future at United," said United General Manager Dave Kasper.
Stratford's career began in his home country, where he registered more than 20 appearances with the Fulham FC Reserve side from 2003-04. He also served as captain for the club's academy side.
In 2004, the midfielder's rookie season for the Mountaineers, Stratford started all 20 matches and recorded a hat trick against Longwood in a 12-minute stretch. In his second year with WVU, Stratford contributed four goals and five assists. As a junior, Stratford served as team co-captain, totaling four goals and ten assists on the campaign. Those 18 points were second-most on the team, and his 10 assists not only led the team, but also the Big East Conference.
In his final season in Morgantown, the team captain continued to flourish, tallying six goals and eight assists in 22 games (all starts). Stratford finished his career as the school's all-time leader in assists (27) and most matches played (85). He was also named to the All-Big East Second Team and the NSCAA All-Region Third Team.
