Bolaños is a Costa Rican international who joined the Whitecaps ahead of the 2016 season. He was a key addition, scoring five goals and adding eight assists in 27 games, 23 of which were starts.
INTERNATIONAL: Bolaños made his senior Costa Rica national team debut in 2005. In addition to his appearances at the 2014 World Cup, he played at the 2006 World Cup and the 2005, 2007, and 2011 editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
OUTSIDE MLS: Beginning his career at Costa Rican powerhouse Saprissa, Bolaños has played two stints with that club and also featured for C.S. Cartagines in his native country. He's also played in Denmark for OB and FC Copenhagen, in Norway with IK Start, and in Qatar for Al-Gharafa. He's won three Costa Rican Primera Division titles with Saprissa as well as the CONCACAF Champions League with that club, in addition to two league titles and a Danish Cup with Copenhagen, where he also played UEFA Champions League games.
NOTES: Older brother Jonathan played for the Chicago Fire in 2003 and subsequently played for the Seattle Sounders (when they were in USL)...was a teammate of Whitecaps and Costa Rica defender Kendall Waston at Saprissa in 2006-07...Linked three separate times to moves in England, with Liverpool, Charlton Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the deal fell through each time.
