Major League Soccer (MLS) Executive Vice President and President of Soccer United Marketing (SUM) Enterprises Douglas Quinn today appointed Will Kuhns as the companies' Director of Communications. In his new position, Kuhns will manage the league's communications department, act as a spokesperson to the media, coordinate public relations activities of SUM and the 12 MLS teams and help formulate communication strategies.
"We're pleased to have Will join Major League Soccer and Soccer United Marketing," Quinn said. "His combination of journalism expertise, soccer knowledge and history with MLS make him an excellent addition to our organization."
The bilingual Kuhns, 32, joins Major League Soccer after covering the league as a journalist since its inception in 1996. For most of 2005, he lived and studied in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on a grant from the J. William Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Guided by an affiliation with El Grafico magazine, he examined Argentina's rich sports culture and wrote stories for U.S. periodicals, including the Miami Herald, USA TODAY, and The Washington Post.
Prior to accepting the grant, Kuhns worked for six years as a Senior Editor at Soccer America, named among the nation's top 50 magazines in 2003 by the Chicago Tribune, and a valuable source for fans of the game since 1971. During the 2002 World Cup, he was a guest analyst for CNN and MSNBC, and he has appeared on ESPN News for the men's NCAA College Cup draw.
From 1996 to 1999, he covered a broad range of sports for The Washington Post and started his professional career writing about NHL hockey and local sports for The Journal Newspapers in suburban Washington, D.C.
Kuhns earned a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from the University of Maryland in 1995. He replaces Simon Borg, who was recently promoted to the Director of International Business position with Soccer United Marketing.
