This year has been something of a disappointment in for Wil Trapp. He was expecting to spend a good portion of his summer trying to win an Olympic medal in Brazil, but the US ended failed to qualify for the Olympic tournament. Then, he was no doubt hoping for return trip to the MLS Cup final, but that doesn't seem likely either as Columbus Crew SC, Cup runners-up in 2015, have suffered through a frustrating season.
Trapp slipped from No. 4 in this list last year to No. 7 in 2016. But that doesn't mean the 5-foot-8, 150-pound midfielder is any less valuable as a member of Crew SC's core. He appeared in his first AT&T MLS All-Star Game and started every game for Columbus before suffering a concussion in late August that forced him out of the lineup.
What the technical staffers say:
“He’s fantastic. Fantastic. I like him. Very good at dropping in deep and getting the ball and playing out, very good at creating things from the central area. He’s got a very good range of passing – short, medium, long. He can connect very, very well. Wins a fair few challenges. Again, I think his passing is his big thing. His ability to read the game is very good. He’s one of the bright spots certainly coming through the national teams, and I think he’s one that’s got a very good future in the game, for sure.”
"He hits as good of a diagonal ball as anyone in the league and is great at starting the Columbus attack. For a guy who’s not the biggest, I think he’s still pretty strong ball winner in midfield.”
“I guess the one question I would have is, is he a product of the Columbus system and the style that they play? Because you’ll watch him play a lot with the youth national teams and he doesn’t look the same. He’ll leave more of a mark on an MLS game than on an Under-23 game. So it’s a question. Does Gregg [Berhalter] get the most out of his skill set and ability with the style that they play? What is the ceiling for him? Is he a guy that can play for the US? I still think he can, but that’ll be to be determined.”
“I think he’s got a tremendous potential. The challenge with Wil Trapp is, can he stay healthy? If he can stay healthy, I think he’s got a lot of potential. One of the things you question when you evaluate young players, or any player, is whether they have the potential and the right mentality. And from my perspective, his mentality is completely intact. Now can he stay healthy, so he can keep his rhythm and continue to develop?”
