Last Match

Earthquakes 1, Rapids 1; July 12, 2008; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif.

The Earthquakes earned a 1-1 tie against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, July 12 at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara. An 11th-minute long ball for San Jose forward Kei Kamara appeared set to be cut out by Colorado midfielder Nick LaBrocca, but Kamara managed to get a piece of the ball, forcing Rapids' keeper Bouna Coundoul into a diving save. San Jose created another chance in the 26th minute when Kamara's cross was half-cleared to James Riley near the top of the box. Riley elected to let rip from distance and Coundoul did well to tip his shot over the bar. A long ball out of the back almost paid off for the Quakes in the 37th minute, when Colorado defender Pablo Mastroeni slipped and fell, allowing Ryan Johnson to get a clear look at goal. But with the ball on his weaker right foot, Johnson could only hit the side netting. Colorado's edge in possession finally resulted in good chance for Christian Gomez in the 40th minute, when his surging run saw him test Joe Cannon from 30 yards. The Quakes' goalkeeper was up to the challenge, and he snared Gomez's drive. Colorado began the second half showing a bit more fluidity in attack. Colorado's Tom McManus just missed finding Gomez with a cross in the 52nd minute. Colin Clark then tracked down the loose ball and put in a tantalizing cross, only for the Quakes Eric Denton to provide a vital clearing header. The Earthquakes answered with a goal in the 62nd minute when a free kick from Ramiro Corrales toward the goal allowed Johnson to knock a diving header to the back of the net. The Quakes nearly doubled their lead five minutes later when Coundoul was on hand to parry away midfielder Ronnie O'Brien's fierce free kick. Colorado equalized in the 70th minute. Given space on the right wing, Terry Cooke swung in a cross, and despite Conor Casey appearing to climb over the back of a Quakes' defender, he nodded home the delivery to level the score at one. Colorado threatened again in the 80th minute, when substitute Omar Cummings went on a mazy run, but his shot was deflected out by defender Nick Garcia. Casey nearly grabbed a stoppage-time winner for the Rapids, but his redirect of Clark's cross was saved by Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon, and the game ended in a stalemate.
