New England Revolution 1, Earthquakes 0; March 21, 2009; Buck Shaw Stadium: Santa Clara, Calif. The San Jose Earthquakes dropped their 2009 season opener, falling 1-0 to the New England Revolution in front of a sellout crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium Saturday night. A 55th-minute goal by Kheli Dube was the difference in a game where San Jose dominated the run of play, but couldn't find the back of the net. A light rain made for a slick pitch, and it took a while for the Earthquakes attack to get rolling. Arturo Alvarez provided some spark in the 25th minute. His run down the right side split two defenders before he got around a third and cut the ball back for Ryan Johnson. But Johnson mis-hit his shot, and when the ball deflected to Darren Huckerby, his blast from 12 yards missed wide right. A few minutes later a Huckerby corner kick was headed wide left by leaping Johnson, and when a Huckerby cross found Alvarez in a tight angle near the right post, Alvarez nodded down a shot directly at Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis. In the 31st minute, Alvarez fired from the top of the restraining arc, and when Reis gave up a rebound, Weaver slammed a shot off the crossbar from close range. It was the closest San Jose would get to scoring. New England got on the scoreboard early in the 55th minute. Jeff Larentowicz chipped a long ball into the box that Kelly Gray tried to flick it away, but it fell right to Dube, who slotted a shot past goalkeeper Joe Cannon and inside the left post. In the 57th minute, Quincy Amarikwa came on for Johnson, as San Jose looked for an equalizer. At the hour mark, Alvarez tried to hook in a shot from 25 yards, but missed high and wide. In the 63rd minute, when Gray's long ball to Amarikwa was knocked down to Huckerby, his shot from the left side was stopped by Reis, well out of goal. Amarikwa then led another rush up field, but fired wide left from 25 yards. In the 68th minute, Shea Salinas replaced Alvarez as San Jose continued to press forward. Four minutes later, a Salinas cross to Amarikwa was deflected wide left from six yards out. San Jose's frustration started to show when Amarikwa picked up a yellow card in the 75th minute, and Eric Denton earned one of his own in the 79th. Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop, searching for the answer, brought on Pablo Campos for Weaver in the 83rd minute. In the 84th minute, a bad clearance off a San Jose corner kick fell to Huckerby, but his volley from 18 yards went over the top. Huckerby then found Campos open at the six yard box, but Campos' header missed badly left. With four of their first five games at home, San Jose was hoping for a fast start in 2009. The Earthquakes play host to the Houston Dynamo next Saturday.

Last Match vs. Houston Dynamo

Houston Dynamo 2, Earthquakes 1; Oct. 15, 2008; Robertson Stadium; Houston, Texas.

The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Houston Dynamo 2-1 at Robertson Stadium. Stuart Holden scored in the sixth minute to put the Dynamo up 1-0. Scott Sealy tied the game for the Earthquakes in the 68th minute and Stuart Holden scored again in stoppage time to give Houston the victory. San Jose held a one-man advantage for 79 minutes of the match. Houston forward Kei Kamara was ejected in the 11th minute for elbowing Earthquakes defender and captain Nick Garcia in the throat while jockeying for position during a throw-in. Houston jumped out to an early lead in the sixth minute on Holden's first goal of the evening. Dynamo midfielder Geoff Cameron crossed the ball in from the left side of the San Jose defense for Kamara, whose sliding shot ricocheted off the post. Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon was forced to react to Kamara's attempt, leaving an open net for Holden's rebound goal. Houston almost extended the lead in the 23rd minute, when Dynamo midfielder Corey Ashe worked a give-and-go with forward Brian Ching to get around Quakes defender Jason Hernandez. The speedy Ashe had a clear path to the goal, but Cannon came out and deflected Ashe's shot wide of the post. Knowing that his team had to win to keep any playoff hopes alive, San Jose coach Frank Yallop substituted midfielder Ryan Johnson for defender Eric Denton in the 29th minute. Johnson took the field as a third forward, shifting the team to a 3-4-3 alignment. San Jose pulled even in the 68th minute with a goal from forward Scott Sealy. A slow Eddie Robinson backpass toward his own goal was nearly picked off by Johnson for an open run at goal, forcing Onstad to come out to the top of the box to muffle the threat with a sliding tackle. The resulting loose ball fell to Sealy, who quickly put a low shot into the empty goal. Midfielder Shea Salinas almost put the Earthquakes ahead in the 72nd minute with a rocket shot from 10 yards out. Salinas' shot was aimed just under the crossbar at the near post, forcing Onstad to make a leaping save. Cannon made a dramatic save in the 85th minute while backpedaling into position after the San Jose defense had apparently stymied a Dynamo attack. Houston defender Bobby Boswell found himself in possession of the ball just outside the box and launched a quick shot, catching Cannon off guard. Cannon, still backpedaling, fell to his right and reached out to knock the shot wide of goal. Houston's winning goal came in the third minute of stoppage time in the second half. This time it was substitute Brian Mullan who sent the cross in for forward Nate Jaqua, with Jaqua's shot deflecting off the post and across the open face of the goal to Holden, who put it in for the game's final score.
