Quakes Select Opara Third Overall in SuperDraft
The San Jose Earthquakes announced Thursday that the club has selected Generation adidas and Wake Forest All-American defender Ike Opara, who led Wake Forest to the College Cup in 2009, with the third overall pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. Opara played eight matches for the United States U-20 team in 2009 and was a key member of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup team. The Durham, N.C., native helped lead the Demon Deacons to the College Cup last season as junior before falling in overtime to eventual champion Virginia. He appeared in 17 games, scoring three goals and notching two assists. The 20-year-old defender earned All-American honors from the NSCAA, Soccer America, College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer and was named a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, which is given to college soccer's best player. He was also selected as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and earned All-ACC first team accolades.
Quakes Select Five in 2010 MLS SuperDraft
The San Jose Earthquakes selected five players in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft Thursday, including Generation adidas and Wake Forest All-American defender Ike Opara with the third overall pick. The Quakes also selected Notre Dame University teammates Michael Thomas and Justin Morrow with their first two selections of the second round, before picking up San Jose native and Leland High School graduate Steve Beitashour with their final pick of the second round. The Quakes took William & Mary forward Andrew Hoxie with their final pick. With their first pick in the second round, San Jose selected Kansas City native and University of Notre Dame midfielder Michael Thomas. Thomas, a two-way central midfielder, appeared in 83 career games for the Fighting Irish and scored 19 goals and notched 13 assists, including six goals and six assists as a senior. Morrow had an outstanding combine prior to the draft after an excellent career with Notre Dame. He played 89 matches and scored seven goals and notched seven assists as a wide midfielder and defender. Beitashour returns to his hometown team after completing his career with San Diego State University. The 5-10 defender appeared in 61 career games for the Aztecs and recorded eight assists. With their only third round pick, the Quakes selected Hoxie, who scored 35 goals in his career for William & Mary. He scored 10 goals three times in his collegiate career and capped his career by being named the 2009 CAA Player of the Year and a NSCAA Third Team All-American.
Ribeiro Called into National Team Camp for Canada
The San Jose Earthquakes announced this week that midfielder Antonio Ribeiro has been named to the roster pool for the Canadian national team for their training camp. Players are set to begin arriving the week of Jan. 18 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, with the camp continuing through the Sunday, Jan. 31 friendly against Jamaica in the National Soccer Stadium in Kingston. The 2009 season marked Ribeiro's first with San Jose. He started all seven games he appeared in and logged 509 minutes in a defensive central midfield role for the Quakes. He has made two appearances in friendlies with the Canadian national team.
San Jose to Open Preseason Jan. 25
The San Jose Earthquakes will begin their preseason camp in preparation for the 2010 season on Monday, Jan. 25. The team will report to Santa Clara for the beginning of their preseason, which will continue through just before March 27, when San Jose opens their regular season with the defending MLS Cup Champions, Real Salt Lake at Buck Shaw Stadium at 6 p.m. PT.
Quakes to Hold Open Tryout
The San Jose Earthquakes will hold open tryouts in Santa Clara at Stanton Field. The tryout is on Jan. 24 and will give hundreds of people the opportunity of a lifetime, to try out for a professional soccer team. The tryout will last from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be overseen by the Earthquakes coaching staff. A maximum of 200 participants will be allowed to try out. The tryout fee has been reduced this year to $75 per person. In addition to the tryout, the participant will also receive an Earthquakes hooded sweatshirt and a ticket to see the Earthquakes home opener on March 27 against Real Salt Lake. Registration is available through the Earthquakes front office by calling (408) 556-7700 or by logging onto www.sjearthquakes.com. Financial assistance will be given to people that qualify. Participants must be 18 years or older and must not be eligible to participate in any high school soccer league during the time of the tryout.

Quakes 2010 Season Tickets
The San Jose Earthquakes have significantly reduced season ticket prices for the 2010 Major League Soccer season. Season tickets start as low as $204. Season ticket prices have been reduced in all sections; Premier Midfield will now be $40 per game ($50 in 2009), Center Circle $30 per game ($35 in 2009), Sideline $20 per game ($30 in 2009), Goal View $15 per game ($20 in 2009) and Supporters Section $12 per game ($18 in 2009). The Quakes have also created a number of new features and benefits for season ticket holders next year. A family section has been added inside the stadium, and the Supporters Section has been expanded to create an even greater home field advantage. Season Ticket Holders will additionally have access to the exclusive tailgate parking lot. Corona Cove seats will now be available as a season ticket option, and an extra row of NetSuite VIP On-field seats will be added for next season. Season Ticket Holders will also have first priority to purchase Earthquakes playoff tickets and tickets for international games. They will receive a 15 percent discount on game day merchandise, invitations to exclusive events, and priority rights to seats in the new stadium. The one thing that is not exclusive to Season Ticket Holders is savings.
