REVOLUTION UPDATE
After falling 3-0 this past weekend to the Chicago Fire, the New England Revolution sits tied for third place in the strong Eastern Conference with a 3-3-1 record (W-L-T). The Eastern Conference has five teams with ten points or more, all of whom are ahead of the top Western Conference teams, Colorado and FC Dallas, who each have nine points on the season. The Revolution has six different players with goals so far this season, and rookie Sainey Nyassi (two goals) is the only player with more than one. Matt Reis has been in the net for every minute of the season for New England, and has given up ten goals in seven games for a 1.43 goals-against-average. The Revolution has been without the services of midfielder Steve Ralston and forward Taylor Twellman for much of the year, as both continue to rehabilitate injuries. Chivas USA has a 2-2-2 record (W-L-T) all-time against New England, and has never lost (2-0-1) as the home team.
CHIVAS USA EARNS HARD-FOUGHT DRAW AT HOUSTON
Chivas USA and the Houston Dynamo battled to a 0-0 tie in Texas on Saturday night, with Brad Guzan making five saves to earn his first shutout of the 2008 season for the Red-and-White. Both teams had a number of chances in the game but neither could break the deadlock, with Guzan being forced into a number of quality saves in the games final minutes. Claudio Suárez received a red card in the 82nd minute for a last-man tackle on Houston's Brian Mullan, and will miss Sunday's game against the Revolution, while defender Lawson Vaughn was forced out of the game in the 13th minute with a broken nose and a gash on his right cheek, after being struck in the face by Dynamo midfielder Dwayne De Rosario's thwarted bicycle kick attempt.
CHIVAS USA RESERVES KEEP UNDEFEATED RECORD WITH TIE IN HOUSTON
The day after Chivas USA and Houston played to a scoreless draw, the Chivas USA Reserves and the Dynamo Reserves also tied, by a score of 1-1. The Red-and-White took the lead in the 54th minute when midfielder Gerson Mayen created the play at the top of the penalty area. His through ball found Anthony Hamilton on the left, and the wide-open Hamilton crossed the ball to the back post, where Chiles finished into an empty net. The Dynamo struck back in the 79th minute when Geoff Cameron headed home an equalizer. The Chivas USA Reserves maintain their undefeated record, with one win and three ties so far this season.
LAWSON VAUGHN SIDELINED 4-6 WEEKS WITH FACIAL FRACTURE
Chivas USA defender Lawson Vaughn is expected to be sidelined between four and six weeks after undergoing surgery for a broken nose and lacerated cheek suffered Saturday during Chivas USA's match at the Houston Dynamo. The injury occurred in the 9th minute when Vaughn, leaping to head a cross in the penalty area, was kicked in the face by Houston midfielder Dwayne De Rosario, who was attempting a bicycle kick on the play. Vaughn underwent surgery on Sunday afternoon at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, Calif. The procedure, performed by Jay W. Granzow MD, included a surgical repair of Vaughn's nose, which was broken in several places, as well as repair to a laceration on his right cheek, which required 32 stitches.
TEAM INJURY UPDATE
Chivas USA will be without Lawson Vaughn for 4-6 weeks after the defender underwent surgery to repair his severely broken nose and lacerated cheek suffered during Saturday's match at Houston, when Dynamo midfielder Dwayne De Rosario kicked him in the face while attempting a bicycle kick. Alecko Eskandarian (left groin strain) and Alex Zotinca (right knee ACL surgery) will also miss this weekend's match.
