Vucinic vanquishes Udinese lead late

Ten-man Roma came from behind to earn a point after a 1-1 draw with Udinese at Olympic Stadium.


Felipe put the visitors ahead in the 54th minute, but substitute Mirko Vucinic replied seven minutes later to level the score.


Roma shot themselves on the foot after Daniele De Rossi was sent off in the 68th minute after a second bookable offense.


The Eternal City outfit did their best to claim a winner but Udinese defended deeply as the Giallorossi failed to move above Fiorentina into fourth position.


The outcome marked Roma's second consecutive draw after last weekend´s 3-3 result at Inter Milan and leaves the Giallorossi one point behind Fiorentina, who host Palermo tomorrow.


Roma coach Luciano Spalletti, who watched the game from the stands as he served a one-match touchline ban, will be disappointed with the result as he expected his side to take a win into Wednesday´s Champions League game against Arsenal.


Despite having to do without injured duo Francesco Totti and Simone Perrotta, the home side seized the initiative from the start.


In the opening minute, Jeremy Menez latched on to De Rossi's cross from the right, but his right-footed central effort was saved by Udinese goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.


Roma almost took the lead in the eighth minute with Felipe´s clearance intercepted by Rodrigo Taddei, whose powerful shot went inches wide of the far post.


Floro Flores´s powerful right-footed strike from the edge of the area went wide in what was the first chance for the visitors.


Asamoah tested Roma goalkeeper Alexander Doni with a bullet strike from the distance which the keeper saved.


Two minutes before the break, Roma suffered a setback with Vincenzo Montella having to replace David Pizarro, who sustained a muscle injury.


On the stroke of half-time, Udinese had a penalty claim turned down after a corner towards the area appeared to hit Philippe Mexes´ hand.


Roma were unlucky not to break the deadlock shortly after the re-start.


Menez´s assist found Montella whose left-footed strike from the edge of the area beat Handanovic but struck the crossbar.


But it was Udinese who took the lead soon after.


Felipe's close-range header from Di Natale's dangerous cross beat Doni.


Roma reacted and Christian Panucci latched onto a corner kick but his header went high over the bar.


Roma´s top scorer Vucinic entered the game replacing Menez before the hour mark as the hosts desperately surged for the equalizer.


He made an immediate impact with the Montenegrin forward finding the equalizer two minutes later.


Vucinic´s right-footed strike inside the area towards the far post beat Handanovic.


Despite being a man down with De Rossi´s sending off, Roma didn´t give up hope.


Montella should have put his team in front in the 80th minute but the veteran striker failed to beat Handanovic on a one-on-one, with his weak effort inside the area cleared by the keeper.


Vucinic´s free-kick was saved by Handanovic in what was the last chance of the game.
