Have you ever wondered what the gameday experience is like for your club's owners and investors?
Superstar comedian and Seattle Sounders part-owner Drew Carey let a camera crew from VICE Sports tag along with him before and during the Rave Green's Aug. 30 match vs. Cascadia rivals the Portland Timbers for the outlet's “Fanfare” series, and the results make for fun viewing.
It's safe to say that Carey's typical match activities are not quite the run-of-the-mill executive suite experience.
From the pregame march to the match and pub-crawling to rubbing shoulders with US women's national team heroes Megan Rapinoe and Hope Solo to a field-side seat a stone's throw from Obafemi Martins & Co., the Cleveland native dives headfirst into his club's supporter-centric culture and explains why he chose to invest in soccer over his other sporting passions.
“The fans are it here, man. It's all about the fans,” Carey said. “One of the things that bugs me about other American sports: You go to a basketball game and they, like, tell you when to chant – it's all corporate. This all comes from the fans.
“I honestly wish the [NFL's] Browns had this – I wish every team in Cleveland had this.”
