Two players have had a stranglehold on MLS Player of the Month honors so far this season, but a third joins the group for his exploits in the month of July.
Vancouver Whitecaps striker Camilo was named MLS Player of the Month for July after scoring four goals and becoming a reliable option up top for his team. In fact, his goal haul this month has helped give him the joint-lead in the Golden Boot race, with 13. For the month, the Whitecaps posted a 2-2-1 record, putting them in the playoff spots in the Western Conference with a game in hand on most of the teams ahead of them in the standings.
And the Brazilian's goals were important in picking up those points during the month, as he notched the equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Sporting Kansas City, and scored a brace, including the winning goal, against Chicago.
Camilo was a nearly-unanimous choice for Player of the Month honors, with Soony Saad and Dillon Powers the only other players to garner first place votes. The selection means Camilo joins two-time Player of the Month winners Mike Magee and Jack McInerney in the 2013 Player of the Month club. (See how the North American Soccer Reporters voted here.)
Following his appearance at the AT&T MLS All-Star Game last night, Camilo and the Whitecaps have a big Cascadia Cup game on the road against the Portland Timbers on Saturday (11 pm ET, watch on MLS Live).
