Vancouver Whitecaps FC 0, Seattle Sounders 0 | MLS Cup Playoffs Recap

It was a tense affair at BC Place on Sunday night as Cascadia rivals Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the Seattle Sounders battled to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinals. The two will travel to Seattle on Thursday to see who advances to the Western Conference Championship (10:30 pm ET; FS1, FOX Deportes in US | TSN5, TVAS in Canada).

There were few attacking opportunities for either team as both will walk away from Leg One with reason to be hopeful going into the next match. The two combined for just one shot on target, not including a Kendall Waston clearance that hit off the crossbar. That figure is the lowest ever in an Audi MLS Cup Playoff match.

Seattle will travel home knowing a win gets them through while Vancouver will need just one goal to put the pressure on Seattle.

Three Things

FEW SCORING CHANCES
: With Vancouver relying on set pieces and Seattle missing
Clint Dempsey
due to suspension, both teams seemed content to not push numbers forward and to try and earn a clean sheet. The one shot on target is not only a playoff record but tied for the lowest in a match this season.

  • LINEUP DECISIONS: With Seattle missing four starters due to injury and suspension, Brian Schmetzer decided to turn to Harry Shipp and Jordy Delem to fill in on the road. On the other end, Carl Robinson was forced into some major changes with Yordy Reyna and Cristian Techera picking up knocks against San Jose. He decided to start Nosa Igiebor for just the second time this season in the middle.

  • EVERYTHING TO PLAY FOR IN SEATTLE
: It’s tough to say who has the upper hand in the series with Seattle getting a draw but failing to score an all-important road goal. A win at home puts the Sounders through, but a road goal by the Whitecaps would force Seattle to score two.
