The US national team attempted to bounce back from a narrow 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup final loss to Mexico with a friendly rematch on Friday, but the result was certainly not the rebound Gregg Berhalter's group had in mind.
El Tri won 3-0 at MetLife Stadium, with a first-half tally by Chicharito followed up with two late goals from substitutes Erick Gutierrez and LA Galaxy attacker Uriel Antuna. Josh Sargent's late consolation penalty attempt for the US was saved.
The loss was a heavy one, their second three-goal loss of the year, following a 3-0 loss to Venezuela in a pre-Gold Cup friendly. Under Berhalter's tenure, the USMNT are 8-4-1 in all senior-team matches so far.
And regarding rival Mexico in particular, this was the biggest loss for the US since July 26, 2009, when Mexico crushed the Americans 5-0 in the 2009 Gold Cup final at MetLife Stadium's predecessor, Giants Stadium. While a few players who featured in that game on each side are still playing professional soccer, no players from that match featured in Friday's game.
