The US national team have a chance to bounce back immediately from Saturday's crushing defeat in the CONCACAF Cup, as they look to gain some confidence against Costa Rica ahead of their first World Cup qualifying matches next month.
SO, DID I MISS ANYTHING?
Five players were added to the US roster (and eight removed) after Saturday's CONCACAF Cup. Four of the additions come from Major League Soccer, with Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Mix Diskerud (New York City FC), Lee Nguyen (New England Revolution) and Brek Shea (Orlando City) joining the team in New Jersey, along with German-based forward Andrew Wooten.
Fabian Johnson was also sent back to his club, Borussia Monchengladbach after head cocach Jurgen Klinsmann determined that he was not injured when he asked to be substituted in the loss to Mexico. Monchengladbach, however, say that Johnson is now being treated for a thigh injury.
HERE'S YOUR CHANCE
With World Cup qualifying starting Nov. 13 against St. Vincent & the Grenadines, relative outsiders like Diskerud and Nguyen should get a chance to catch Klinsmann's eye and earn a look for bigger matches in the future. Youngsters like DeAndre Yedlin and Bobby Wood, who stood out as subs against Mexico, will be looking to make their cases for starting spots.
WHAT'S UP WITH THE TICOS?
Costa Rica are an anemic 1-6-5 in the 2015 calendar year, their only win a 1-0 friendly victory over Uruguay at home on Sept. 8. While most games this year have been away or at neutral sites, Costa Rica lost 1-0 at home on Thursday to South Africa, snapping a 14-game home unbeaten streak (12-0-2) that dated back to 2012.
GARDEN STATE BLUES
Costa Rica are already 0-2 in New Jersey this year, losing controversially in extra time to Mexico in the Gold Cup quarterfinals at MetLife Stadium on July 19 and falling to Brazil 1-0 in a friendly at Red Bull Arena on Sept. 5.
