The magical moment created by Luciano Acosta and Wayne Rooney at Audi Field attracted more attention than any other goal scored in Major League Soccer’s Week 24 action, as the duo linked up to deliver a dramatic last-second win for D.C. United over Orlando City SC.
But Acosta’s header finished second-best in the AT&T Goal of the Week race, knocked off by a sweet strike netted by a defender two time zones away the night before.
Finnish international Jukka Raitala has won this week’s GOTW poll with his first career MLS goal, a lovely piece of technique that earned the Montreal Impact a 1-1 road draw at Real Salt Lake on Saturday.
Raitala’s left-footed finish racked up 53 percent of the vote, safely besting Acosta’s 33 percent. Further back, Orlando’s Dom Dwyer came third (6%), Philadelphia center back Jack Elliott ran fourth (5%) and New York City FC’s Ismael Tajouri-Shradi brought up the rear (3%).
