Udinese revived to scrap Napoli draw

Udinese

Udinese came from two goals down to deny Napoli victory in a thriller at Stadio San Paolo.

All the goals arrived in a crazy 21-minute spell at the end of the opening half as the hosts took the lead through Ezequiel Lavezzi after 24 minutes while Marek Hamsik doubled the advantage three minutes later.

Udinese hit back through an Antonio Di Natale penalty after 32 minutes while Fabio Quagliarella completed the scoring and rescued a point for his side with a brilliant equaliser on the stroke of the interval.

The solid away point will keep morale high in the Udinese camp following on from Wednesday's impressive 2-1 win against Juventus, while Napoli will be frustrated not to have secured a win that would have taken them fifth in the Serie A standings.

As it is, Napoli sit seventh on 34 points after ending a three-game losing streak while Udinese are 12th.

Napoli went into the game just 48 hours after they were told they would be without midfielder Daniele Mannini for a year after he was banned for arriving late to an anti-doping test, but nevertheless set about their task in positive fashion.

The first opening went the way of the hosts early on when Walter Gargano sent in a free-kick but the Udinese defence stood firm.

Udinese looked lively going forward and had a good chance after 14 minutes, Di Natale firing in a free-kick from 30 yards that went just wide of Nicolas Navarro's right post.

Gokhan Inler took aim for Udinese after 20 minutes but his shot from the edge of the box was always rising, although the breakthrough would arrive just moments later.

German Denis was the architect of Napoli's opener, his run down the left culminating with a pass into Lavezzi whose shot took a deflection off Aleksandar Lukovic on its way into the net.

And the Partenopei's lead was doubled almost immediately as Gargano's near-post free-kick was nodded home by Hamsik.

Edoardo Reja's men appeared to be cruising at that stage but Udinese rocked them back on their heels when they pulled a goal back after 32 minutes following Paolo Cannavaro's foul on Christian Zapata inside the area.

Di Natale took the responsibility for the resulting spot kick and made no mistake with the finish.

Napoli looked as though they would at least go into the break with the lead but Quagliarella had other ideas, the Italy international pegging the hosts back with a wonderful volley on the turn after being picked out by Mauricio Isla.

Napoli had the better of the chances in the second period as first Hamsik headed over from Gargano's corner while Lavezzi did well to evade the attentions of Lukovic before steering a lob over Samir Handanovic and wide of the mark.

Lavezzi spurned a glorious chance to seal the win for Napoli in the final minute when he failed to trouble Handanovic when unchallenged in front of goal, while Udinese also might have nicked it at the death when Giovanni Pasquale skied an effort in the third minute of injury time with just Nicolas Navarro to beat.
