Toronto FC are eager to see the Jermain Defoe era begin, but they may have to wait a little longer.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood said Wednesday that the striker is dealing with a hamstring injury and will not be able to play in his expected finale with Spurs, a Europa League clash against Dnipro on Thursday.
As a result, Defoe's tenure with Spurs is over, but the injury also raises questions about his health at the start of his time with TFC. There has been no word on how long the injury could sideline him beyond this week, but Toronto open the season on March 15 in Seattle after a bye week to open the season.
Defoe is expected to join Toronto over the weekend to begin his first season in MLS after a 15-year career in the English Premier League with West Ham United, Portsmouth, and Tottenham. The 31-year-old was signed to a Designated Player contract this offseason by TFC, along with USMNT midfielder Michael Bradley and Brazilian forward Gilberto.
Toronto FC did not respond when asked for comment about Defoe's injury when contacted by MLSsoccer.com.
