It was about to be one of the biggest upsets in Concacaf Champions League history, but a goalkeeper saved Liga MX side Tigres UANL at the death — just not in the way you're thinking.
Tigres were up 3-2 in their second leg Round of 16 match against Alianza in stoppage time at home, but were on the brink of being eliminated thanks to the score being tied on aggregate and Alianza scoring more away goals. Tigres won a free kick from just outside the box and Eduardo Vargas stepped up to the ball in the fourth minute of stoppage time. The referee originally gave just four minutes of stoppage time.
With Tigres needing a goal, their goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman naturally came up the field to take part in the set piece. The Argentine was left almost entirely unmarked and was able to nod a perfect header into the back of the net. Pandemonium ensued.
Tuca Ferretti's team has been a consistent presence in CCL in recent years, but have failed to win the continental title. They will continue their quest in the quarterfinals against New York City FC.
