-- list of waived players
Two of the most recognizable names were part of Chivas USA's heralded group of reinforcements last summer. Defender Hector Castro, who never saw the field for the Red-and-White due to a season-ending knee injury suffered in training shortly after joining the club, and goalkeeper Sergio Garcia have both been waived.

Real Salt Lake have been the most active this offseason as they have looked to retool a squad that finished second-to-last in their inaugural season in 2005. In the past fortnight, they have cut loose eight players, including former first round MLS SuperDraft pick Diego Walsh and international players Leslie Fitzpatrick (Trinidad & Tobago) and Robert Scarlett (Jamaica).

Defender Stephen Herdsman, who is out of contract but has spent the preseason with the Columbus Crew, is another veteran departing his current team. He retired from the Colorado Rapids in 2003, only to make a comeback with the Crew in 2004. Two injury-plagued seasons later, Herdsman and the Crew have parted ways.

A couple of players who have been waived this winter have already been looking for new jobs. Defender Ricky Lewis, formerly of the Colorado Rapids, has been on trial with RSL, while former MetroStars defender Chris Leitch has tried out for former coach Bob Bradley and Chivas USA.

Leitch was named the MetroStars Defender of the Year in 2005, starting in 28 matches. In addition to Leitch, the MetroStars also waived defender Tim Regan on Wednesday. He made 18 starts in 2005.

Per league rules, all teams must have no more than 18 senior roster players and 10 developmental players on their books as of March 1. All 26 players who have been placed on waivers as of Wednesday will be available for selection in a waiver draft on Friday. Any players not claimed during the waiver draft will have their MLS rights retained by their former club for 12 months after their release date.
