COLUMBUS, Ohio — On the day that one of his clubs earned set a new MLS mark for unbeaten road games at 10, the late Lamar Hunt was honored at Crew Stadium.
A statue of Hunt was dedicated at the stadium prior to the Crew's 0-0 tie with FC Dallas, who earned the unbeaten away record previously held by the Crew.
Hunt was a founder of Major League Soccer and the Crew in 1996, and his Dallas-based Hunt Sports Group acquired the Dallas franchise in 2002.
“It’s very appropriate that we have a statue to remember his contributions toward Crew Stadium,” said his son, Clark Hunt, chairman of Hunt Sports Group.
“He would no doubt be very unhappy with it,” he joked. “He was such a humble man. It was never about him. He would be embarrassed we have a statue of him at Crew Stadium. From a family standpoint we felt it was the right thing to do.”
The statue is of the same design as those at FCD’s Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas, and Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, home of the Hunt’s NFL Chiefs.
