Sporting Kansas City's already decimated back line just suffered another massive blow.
On Sunday, the club announced that right back Chance Myers will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left ankle and will miss the remainder of the 2014 season.
Myers suffered the injury in the 36th minute of Friday's 2-2 draw against Toronto FC, a game in which he filled in at center back.
"This is very disappointing," Myers said in a club statement. "I will work hard to not only come back from this injury, but to come back stronger. I wish my teammates the best of luck during the remainder of the season and will support the team any way I can."
"First and foremost, I am very upset for Chance," SKC manager Peter Vermes said in a statement. "Obviously, it's a blow to the team because he is an important member of our group. It will be hard to replace his qualities and experience, but we will do the best we can during his absence and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch."
Injuries, call-ups and suspension have devastated the club's defensive corps: Ike Opara is already lost for the season with an ankle injury, while Aurelien Collin is still recovering from a hamstring issue. Matt Besler and Lawrence Olum are on international duty and 17-year-old Erik Palmer-Brown was serving suspension on Friday.
Myers, who the club selected as the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2008, was a fixture at right back during the 2013 MLS Cup winning season, earning himself a call-up to the US senior national team's 2014 January camp. Shortly after participating in that camp he signed a new contract with Sporting Kansas City.
