The Portland Timbers can clinch a berth in the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs with a win over Sporting Kansas City, and a little help, when the Western Conference squads square off Sunday at Children's Mercy Park.
Sporting (10-15-7) are hoping to play the role of spoilers after being eliminated from playoff contention following a stunning 2-1 defeat to Minnesota United Wednesday night at Allianz Field. Botond Barath put SKC in front on seven minutes, but Ozzie Alonso leveled in the 70th minute and Hassani Dotson gave the Loons the lead at the death as Sporting suffered a fourth consecutive defeat.
The Timbers (13-13-6) were eight minutes from three massive points, but settled for one in a 2-2 draw with the New England Revolution at Providence Park Wednesday night. Portland can clinch a playoff berth with a win in its penultimate game and a FC Dallas loss to the Colorado Rapids. Jeremy Ebobisse's second goal of the game gave the Timbers a 2-0 lead in the 82nd minute, but Gustavo Bou and Carles Gil scored late for the Revs to secure the draw.
The Timbers' last win came against Sporting Kansas City Sept. 7 at Providence Park. Ebobisse leveled in the 83rd minute, canceling Benny Feilhaber's opening goal and Brian Fernandez struck for the winner in the 90th minute.
