Sporting Kansas City have acquired Rwandan international defender Abdul Rwatubyaye, the club announced Tuesday. The center back is under contract for 2019 with team options through 2022.
Rwatubyaye, 22, joins SKC from Rwandan club Rayon Sports FC. Over his career, he has won three league titles in his native Rwanda while making 22 appearances with the national team.
Rwatubyaye has featured in the CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup, African Nations Championship and Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
The defender joins Matt Besler, Andreu Fontas, Botond Barath and Graham Smith as central defenders under contract for 2019 following the trade of Ike Opara.
SKC open their 2019 competitive campaign in the Concacaf Champions League on Feb. 21 against Toluca before opening their MLS season on March 3 against LAFC.
