The social media reaction to Toronto FC's CCL loss

CCL - Chivas - celebrate goal - Toronto FC - disappointment

Toronto FC came oh so close to hoisting the 2018 Concacaf Champions League trophy on Wednesday, but after losing in a penalty shootout in the second leg of the final to Chivas de Guadalajara, social media in Canada, the US and Mexico took a few moments to reflect on TFC's run.

Toronto FC legend Danny Dichio, who scored the first goal in TFC history in 2007, spoke for the city of Toronto in offering his support following the loss.

Real Salt Lake manager Mike Petke had words of encouragement for his TFC counterpart Greg Vanney and Petke's former assistant coach and current TFC assistant Robin Fraser:

One player who has been to the CCL final in the past, RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando, wanted to make sure his team's run in 2010-11 was remembered but also took a moment to congratulate TFC on their run this year.

Guadalajara-based journalist Tom Marshall offered his take on the run TFC made and how it took the Champions League to new heights.

And Toronto FC offered a word of thanks to the fans as they supported the club through the CCL run and beyond.
