The American soccer collective rejoiced last week when Sergino Dest chose to represent the US men’s national team instead of Holland, and now you can hear from the outside back himself about his choice.
Aaron West of Bleacher Report caught up with the Ajax defender, as they delved into the thought process behind his decision, who he sought advice from and more. Most importantly, Dest said, he felt like the US backed him during the ups and downs of his young career.
“My whole youth I played in the U.S., so they believed in me and that feels nice,” the 19-year-old said. “They believed in me in the hard times, so that’s why I chose them.”
It also helped that Dest has developed close relationships with several other USMNT youngsters, including FC Dallas outside back Reggie Cannon.
“I love Reggie,” Dest quickly remarked.
But Dest isn’t done chasing his dreams, not even as he carves out a starting spot for Ajax in the Eredivisie and Champions League. Rather, he outlined how he wants to play for Barcelona and in the Premier League.
They’re lofty aspirations that even he acknowledged might have to wait.
“Right now, I’m not ready for it,” Dest said. “I still have to develop in a lot of things. But I think I have the potential to reach it."
