Seattle Sounders 1, Vancouver Whitecaps 0 | 2019 MLS Match Recap

Kelvin Leerdam's strike five-plus minutes into second-half stoppage time gave Seattle Sounders FC a 1-0 win over Cascadia rivals Vancouver Whitecaps FC Saturday night at CenturyLink Field.

It was sweet justice for the Sounders, who peppered the Whitecaps' defense with attack after attack in the late going to end a five-match winless streak. The Whitecaps' streak of six games without a loss came to an end.

The Sounders had an apparent Danny Leyva goal in the 60th minute taken off the scoreboard after an officials' video review deemed that Whitecaps goalkeeper Zac MacMath was fouled just before the goal.

Justin Dhillon, signed from the USL Championship on Friday, made his MLS debut for Seattle, and the 16-year-old homegrown Sounder Leyva became the third-youngest player ever to start an MLS match.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: With the Concacaf Gold Cup and Copa America ending soon, the Sounders aren't far from returning to full strength. Given a lack of wins of late, if nothing else, a lot of young players have received invaluable experience should they be called upon down the road. For the Whitecaps, seven matches in July loom, including Canadian Championship games.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Leyva had what was first ruled his first career goal, but upon video review, MacMath was ruled to have been fouled on the play by Dhillon just before Leyva looped a shot over three Whitecaps defenders in the 60th minute. That prompted boos from the home crowd toward MacMath for the rest of the match.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: MacMath and his seven saves were in the running until Leerdam struck for the winner. It was the culmination of a buildup of chances that the Whitecaps tried valiantly to fend off but couldn't. A nod to Seattle's Stefan Frei, who was big in goal when needed.
