Sanchez cinches Udinese surge late

Udinese

Substitute Alexis Sanchez struck a last-gasp winner as Udinese's resurgence continued with a narrow triumph over Bologna.

Sanchez came off the bench and hit a superb individual goal after 92 minutes as Udinese extended their unbeaten run to three matches after ending a three-month losing streak with a 2-1 defeat of Juventus.

Udinese remain 12th following the triumph, while Bologna stay 16th, just three points above the relegation zone, after their first away loss since November 2.

Before their win against Scudetto contenders Juventus, Udinese had collected just three points in their previous 11 league games.

Club president Giampaolo Pozzo repeatedly backed coach Pasquale Marino through the rough stretch, a move the fans and the local media did not agree with.

The Udinese supremo recently revealed that had things not started to change for the better, he would have had no choice but to sack him.

But Pozzo's patience appears to have paid off and the barren run seems to have been extinguished after a second win in three matches.

Udinese were without defender Damiano Ferronetti and striker Fabio Quagliarella, who were both suspended.

Their absence was clearly missed as the hosts struggled to assert themselves in the opening quarter against Bologna, their only chance of note coming when Antonio Di Natale's effort hit the side netting after three minutes.

The visitors' first significant attack came after 21 minutes when Francesco Valiani narrowly failed to find Marco Di Vaio.

A cross from Pablo Osvaldo was then just out of the reach of Di Vaio before Udinese ended the first half in the ascendancy.

Di Natale beat the offside trap and the linesman's flag but, with only Bologna goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli to beat, could not gather the ball.

Gokhan Inler then shot wide in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Di Vaio attempted to break the deadlock with an ambitious free-kick early in the second period, but the Italy striker could not find the target.

Udinese had to wait until the 73rd-minute for their first effort on goal of the second half, Simone Pepe firing a fine shot from outside the area which whistled outside the post.

Bologna almost stole all three points for their third straight away win but Marco Bernacci was denied by a stunning stop by Udinese goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

Bernacci raced through only to see Handanovic make a vital save.

Udinese's patience then paid off as Sanchez struck the winner.

The 20-year-old, who replaced Mauricio Isla after 67 minutes, dribbled past two defenders and fired a low left-foot drive into the net from outside the area.

Sanchez was booked for his overzealous celebrations as Udinese triumphed.
