TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS:Signing
The San Jose Earthquakes announced the signing of US U-20 national team goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski to a Homegrown Player contract on Wednesday, adding depth at a position of need early in their offseason.
A product of San Jose's youth academy, the 20-year-old Marcinkowski will be returning to the Bay Area after his junior season at Georgetown, and joining a side that may be parting ways with the out-of-contract David Bingham.
"JT has emerged as one of the brightest goalkeeper prospects in the nation," Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli said in a club release. "He established himself as a regular with the US U-20s and we're excited about his potential as a professional. He is also further proof of the strides that our youth system has made and expect more Academy products to follow in his footsteps."
For Georgetown, Marcinkowski maintained a 0.88 GAA over 56 starts in three collegiate seasons, and helped the Hoyas to the Big East title in his freshman and junior seasons.
On the international level, he was the second-choice goalkeeper behind Jonathan Klinsmann for the US at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea. And in April, Marcinkowski trained with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, which was later reported to be one of the clubs pursuing former D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid.
Bingham started the first 23 matches of the 2017 campaign for San Jose before falling out of favor to second-year pro Andrew Tarbell. San Jose also parted ways last month with goalkeeper coach Tim Hanley, who had served in that role for the last three seasons and 11 overall.
