The San Jose Earthquakes are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first match in MLS history on Saturday, when they’ll host D.C. United at Avaya Stadium (10:30 pm ET; MLS LIVE).
The match will serve as a commemoration of the MLS' inaugural match, which saw San Jose – then the Clash – beat D.C. 1-0 at Spartan Stadium on April 2, 1996.
The Quakes are rolling out plenty of 20th anniversary content ahead of the match, which will feature several throwback giveaways for fans in attendance, a halftime ceremony honoring former Clash players and staff and specially-designed numbers on San Jose’s uniforms.
The Earthquakes even went as far as to animate the first goal in MLS history, giving Eric Wynalda’s late winner from the inaugural match the video game animation treatment. Check it out above.
