Expansion Draft

San Jose Earthquakes acquire forward Mark Sherrod in trade with Orlando City

Mark Sherrod, Houston Dynamo

Despite joining his third different MLS club on Thursday, Mark Sherrod will begin 2015 with the only head coach for whom he has played as a professional.

After selecting Sherrod in the SuperDraft while coaching the Houston Dynamo, new San Jose Earthquakes manager Dominic Kinnear landed Sherrod in a trade with Orlando City on Thursday, one day after the Lions had selected the second-year forward in the Expansion Draft. In return, Orlando received San Jose's second-round pick (No. 25 overall) in this year's SuperDraft.

"Mark is a good pickup for the team," Kinnear said in a statement. "I'm happy for a chance to work with him again. The players, the staff and the fans will enjoy his attitude and work ethic, both on and off the field."

Sherrod, 24, had two goals and one assist in nine games for Houston last year before tearing his left ACL against D.C. United on May 21. The Knoxville, Tennessee, native starred for Memphis in college, twice being named Conference USA Player of the Year. He finished his college career playing for Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney, a former MLS All-Star and US national team contributor who played for Kinnear in both San Jose and Houston.
