Ruud rallies Real after transfer window

Real Madrid forward Ruud van Nistelrooy has warned that his team need to stop focusing on the events of this summer's transfer window and concentrate on the defense of their Primera Liga title.

The September 1 transfer deadline passed with Madrid being unable to capture their number one target Cristiano Ronaldo as well as losing their star forward Robinho after his 11th-hour departure to Manchester City.

The reigning Spanish champions also lost their opening game of the season at Deportivo La Coruna the weekend before the deadline, with coach Bernd Schuster bemoaning the lack of choice upfront in his side.

But Van Nistelrooy, who scored Madrid's only goal of the 2-1 defeat in Galicia, still believes the squad is fine as it is.

"The reality is there are four strikers in the squad right now, not just Raul and me. There's Saviola and Higuain too," he told Spanish newspaper AS.

"I think that's enough at the moment and we don't need any more.

"We train and think about winning games, that's it. We can't sign anyone now so we should only be thinking about the games we've got coming up and not about who should be signed, about what happened with Robinho, and about everything that went on with Cristiano Ronaldo.

"We have to give everything with this squad because that is all we have."

However, while he refused to admit his side were short on options in front of goal, Van Nistelrooy did reveal his belief the club could struggle to find cover on the wings should the injury-plagued Arjen Robben be confined to the sidelines this season.

"The situation as it is means we only have Robben as an out-and-out natural winger. I hope he has a lucky season with injuries," he continued.

"There are other players who can play on the wing, like Higuain or [he stops and laughs].

"We'll have to look into this and if we're lacking a winger I'm sure the club will work on that."
