TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Rumor
The LA Galaxy will be looking for a new manager, most likely, in the offseason, but could they add a star player from a South American titan to go with a new coach?
That's the rumor from Marca, which reported on Thursday that the Galaxy are interested in both Boca Juniors forward Dario Benedetto and Boca manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto.
Benedetto, 28, has played his entire career to date in his native Argentina and Mexico. After his career really took off at Club Tijuana and Club América, he returned to Argentina to play for Boca Juniors under Barros Schelotto.
Benedetto has been linked to an MLS move before, and Marca suggests he could be a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic if the Swede moves on after this season. The publication also suggests Barros Schelotto could join Benedetto in Los Angeles, after Sigi Schmid was fired several weeks ago and Dom Kinnear leading the side at present as an interim manager.
Barros Schelotto, who helped usher in a new era of star power in MLS when he played for Columbus Crew SC from 2007-2010, has managed just two clubs to date, Lanus and Boca Juniors, in a league where managerial turnover is persistent. Although a previous move to Italian club Palermo fell through for licensing reasons, Barros Schelotto is considered an up-and-coming manager in the sport and won the Copa Sudamericana with Lanus in 2013 and two Argentine league titles with Boca. His ties to MLS mean he has been frequently mooted as a future head coach in the league.
