UPDATE, Feb. 2 – 11 am ET: There's still a chance that Boca Juniors midfielder Emanuel Reynoso joins Minnesota United, with head coach Adrian Heath calling it a "wait-and-see" situation, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
"It’s obviously gone to a stage where we are going to make a decision on that sooner or later, but we are still very optimistic," Heath said. "It’s still very much in the pipeline.”
Heath also entertained the idea of shifting to other transfer targets aside from Reynoso, an attacking midfielder who could help to replace Darwin Quintero.
“We’ve got one or two people, targets, that we look at, but in terms of — we have to be mindful of the fact that he is Boca Juniors player,” Heath said. “And we are dictated to when they think it’s going to be right for them to do something.”
ORIGINAL, Jan. 22 – 1 pm ET: Minnesota United are interested in acquiring Boca Juniors midfielder Emanuel Reynoso, according to multiple reports that came out on Wednesday.
A report from Fox Sports in Argentina says Boca manager Miguel Angel Russo deemed the Argentine close to non-transferable, due to his current form and place in the squad. This despite interest from Minnesota, which was also reported by Argentine outlet TyC Sports. ESPN's Jeff Carlisle reported on Wednesday afternoon that Minnesota technical director Mark Watson is currently in South America in an attempt to get the deal over the line.
The development comes amid news from Loons’ preseason camp that they’re looking to add three-to-four players ahead of the 2020 MLS campaign.
While Reynoso may be too important to Boca’s plans, the 24-year-old has emerged as a key piece since arriving from Club Atletico Talleres in 2018. With Boca, the attack-minded midfielder has four goals and eight assists through 56 matches.
This offseason, Minnesota have already traded for goalkeeper Tyler Miller from LAFC, midfielder Marlon Hairston from the Houston Dynamo and midfielder Jacori Hayes from FC Dallas. They’re yet to make a splash on the international market, instead looking domestically with the aforementioned trades and signing midfielder James Musa on a free after he spent two seasons with USL Championship side Phoenix Rising.
Minnesota made the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs last season, their third since joining the league as an expansion club. They’ll open their 2020 campaign March 1 at the Portland Timbers before returning to their first full campaign at Allianz Field March 15 against the New York Red Bulls.
