Could Jason Kreis be headed back to Real Salt Lake?
It's a possibility according to a report from The Athletic, which cites sources relaying that RSL is planning to interview Kreis for both their general manager and head coaching positions. Should it come to fruition, it would mark a reunion between Kreis and the club he previously managed from 2017-2013 and made 58 appearances for as a player from 2005-2007. Kreis went 112-85-64 across 261 matches in that first stint coaching RSL, winning MLS Cup in 2009.
The 46-year-old also coached New York City FC during its 2015 expansion season and Orlando City SC from 2016-2018.
Kreis is currently on the technical staff for expansion side Inter Miami, which is set to begin play for the 2020 season, as well as the head coach of the US Under-23 national team and was given permission from Inter Miami to interview with RSL.
Kreis would give RSL an experienced option as they make the decision on who will permanently replace former head coach Mike Petke, who was let go midseason. Interim head coach Freddy Juarez led the club to a 7-4-2 mark after taking over, getting the team to the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. They knocked off the Portland Timbers with a 2-1 home victory in Round One before bowing out in a 2-0 defeat to the Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field on Wednesday.
