Celebrity owners are becoming more common in MLS these days, and a recent report indicates another star who tried to get a piece of an MLS team.
Pablo Maurer reported in The Athleticon Thursday that NBA star Kevin Durant, now with the Brooklyn Nets, has twice attempted to buy a stake in D.C. United and remains interested in investing in the league.
Durant, 31, is from the DMV area, helping to explain the interest in D.C. United in particular. If he were to get involved in MLS ownership, he would not be the first NBA star, past or present, to be in the club – Houston Rockets star James Harden, a former teammate of Durant, bought a stake in the Houston Dynamo earlier this year, while former Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson is a founding co-owner of LAFC.
Beyond the NBA, there are celebrity co-owners at the Seattle Sounders (comedian and game show host Drew Carey, NFL star Russell Wilson, singer Ciara and rapper Macklemore), LAFC (Hollywood star Will Ferrell, USWNT legend Mia Hamm, former MLB star Nomar Garciaparra) and even expansion side Austin FC, with Hollywood leading man Matthew McConaughey among the ownership group for the incoming team.
